Dr. Bazzett-Matabele earned her B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Michigan. She received her M.D. degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University. She then completed her fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Louisville. She spent 15 years at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana with a clinical gynecologic oncology practice. It was there that she received the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Residency Education from The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She then moved to Rwanda to work with the Human Resources for Health (HRH) program to offer training in gynecologic oncology. Dr. Bazzett-Matabele was then recruited by the University of Botswana as the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to initiate the country’s first Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program.
She is a member of the World Health Organization’s Expert Group for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer Initiative. She has published numerous abstracts and journal publications and has been co-investigator in clinical research projects.
Her interest is in providing gynecologic oncology training in limited resource settings with a special interest in cervical cancer and gestational trophoblastic diseases.
