Dr Nicole Saur speaks to ecancer at the SIOG 2019 meeting in Geneva about progress and results form the Geriatric Oncology Surgical Assessment and Functional rEcovery After Surgery (GOSAFE) study evaluating quality of life and functional recovery of elderly patients after major cancer surgery.
She explains that usually clinicians are thinking primarily about post-surgical and oncological outcomes after surgery rather than functional recovery and quality of life.
Dr Saur reports that if patients had more than one complication in the surgery, they had a doubled rate of having a functional decline.
