Dr Benjamin Anderson - University of Washington, Seattle, USA

Dr Benjamin Anderson introduces the Breast Cancer Care Quality Index (BCCi), a set of quantitative and qualitative measures designed to assess how breast cancer care systems function within their local context.

He explains that traditional approaches have focused too narrowly on individual tools, such as mammography equipment or specific drugs, rather than on how care is delivered as a system.

The BCCi shifts the focus to functionality, patient throughput, and care delivery across the full pathway.

Aligned with the World Health Organisation Global Breast Cancer Initiative, the index evaluates system performance across early detection, prompt diagnosis, and treatment to completion.

Dr Anderson highlights the value of the BCCi for ministries of health and healthcare systems in both low- and high-income settings, providing objective insights to identify gaps, guide problem-solving, and adapt services to changing healthcare environments.
