Dr Wala Ben Kridis speaks to ecancer about BRCA1/BRCA2 germline mutations in patients with breast/ovarian cancer in Tunisia.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with Tunisia reporting over 2000 new cases in 2022.
While most cases are sporadic, 5-10% are hereditary. Dr Kridis highlights that screening for breast cancer and BRCA mutations is essential, starting at age 30.
Research in Tunisia has identified nine BRCA mutations in 38 families, with a 40% mutation rate in further studies.
She concludes by saying that new pathogenic mutations have been documented, highlighting the need for ongoing screening.
