Dr Zipporah Ali speaks to ecancer at the 2019 AORTIC conference in Maputo about the integration of palliative care into the healthcare system in Kenya.
Dr Ali explains that palliative care had previously only been offered in hospices, of which there are only around 17 in the whole country.
She explains that they have been working with the Ministry of Health to set up palliative care units in public hospitals in each county.
Dr Ali adds that they have advocated for pain medication to be made more available, for nurses to be trained in the basic principles of palliative care and for palliative care to be included in the Universal Health Care package.
She concludes by giving her advice for other countries.
