Mortality from gastric cancer is the second highest of all cancers within Japan, and the increasing age and weight of the Japanese population makes surgery to treat this cancer progressively more difficult. Dr Takeshi Sano discusses D2 lymphadenectomy, a lymph node dissection procedure that has been developed in Japan for the treatment of gastric cancer and suggests reasons for the high level of geographic homogeneity seen in global gastric cancer treatment outcomes.
