The paradigm of cancer prevention has been evolving over the last several decades, from a promise to a possibility and now to a reality. The theme for this year’s conference is “Advancing Cancer Prevention through Technology.” Major advances have been made in our understanding of cancer genetics, cancer biology, and tumorigenesis through the application of newly developed technology. Clinical and translational researchers are now in a position to use technology to develop improved cancer risk models, identify critical growth-regulating molecules, early detection markers, and targets of future cancer preventive interventions. As the incidence of cancer continues to increase, the field of cancer prevention offers unprecedented opportunities to decrease the worldwide burden of cancer. The integrated efforts of researchers from diverse fields within cancer prevention will be required to translate basic science insights into public health benefit. In the next few years, a dramatic increase in cancer incidence is anticipated. Now is the time for basic scientists, population-based scientists, physicians, and other health care professionals to join governments, industry, and philanthropic groups to work together to prevent cancer and reduce cancer incidence and mortality. This meeting will provide a unique forum for us to share our ideas, forge collaborations, and together make progress in cancer prevention and early detection. This conference will be of interest to investigators in every prevention subspecialty. We look forward to welcoming you to Boston for what promises to be an outstanding tenth anniversary conference.
