Prof Deborah Fenlon talks to ecancer about a study reviewing laser therapy for vulvo-vaginal atrophy (VVA) or genito-urinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in breast cancer survivors.
She explains that when women undergo the menopause they can develop VVA which can leave them vulnerable to vaginal and urinary tract infections.
As chemotherapy and other therapies can knock out the ovaries, this can lead to an early menopause and therefore leave cancer survivors subject to infections.
Prof Fenlon explains that the laser treatment removes very fine layers of skin from the vagina, stimulating new growth and helping it become healthier.
