Prof Michael Carducci speaks to ecancer.tv about a trial looking at the use of pomegranate extract in prostate cancer patients with post treatment increases in PSA (prostate-specific antigen). Patients were assessed to see how quickly PSA level doubled and this was compared to the expected duration. Although this study was not placebo controlled, time until PSA doubled increased by six to seven months in patients taking the extract. Quantity of pomegranate extract did not affect efficacy and Prof Carducci explains that although this extract has not been approved medicinal use there is no associated danger and it could potential have beneficial effects.
