Dr Jayant Vaidya speaks to ecancer about single-dose intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) during lumpectomy for breast cancer as being an innovative patient-centred treatment.
He explains a paper was written to review all the current modern radiotherapy techniques. These included whole breast radiotherapy techniques, partial breast radiotherapy techniques as well as the decision to not give any radiotherapy to patients at all.
Dr Vaidya concludes IORT demonstrated the benefits of low recurrence rates and allowed the avoidance of scattered radiation therefore improving overall survival for breast cancer patients.
