Education with a focus on translational cancer research is still an unmet need.
To cover that need, the Summer School in Translational Cancer Research will bring together PhD students, postdocs, and researching clinicians (residents) from the entire research continuum and has been a much appreciated and successful event in the past years.
The Summer School in Translational Cancer Research will take place in beautiful Algarve, Portugal, from October 7-11, 2019.
It is offered under the umbrella of Cancer Core Europe (CCE), organized in cooperation with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, as well as the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).
This Summer School will give examples of research areas covering the continuum from basic through clinical research, to what is needed for an adoption into the health care system and outcomes research.
Main topics in this year will be:
· Hallmarks of Cancer
· Personalized Cancer Medicine
· Drug Development
· Immunooncology and Immunotherapy
· Cancer Prevention
· Science Policy, Patient and Public Involvement
The participants will have the possibility to present their research projects by oral or poster presentations.
Moreover, the Summer School in Translational Cancer Research will give excellent opportunities for participants to interact with well-known speakers, create networks, and initiate collaborations in Europe and world-wide.
Feedback from Participants
Adouda Adjiri, Physician Scientist: “Overall lectures ranked from good to excellent and each lecture was followed with exciting discussions raised by students’ questions and then by participants.“
Terézia Kisková, PhD Student: “As a basic researcher I sometimes loose the vision of why and what I am doing during the routine of everyday´s laboratory work. The Summer school has bridged the gaps between medical doctors and basic researchers. I now understand even better the need of basic research in the clinics and learnt to understand the "language of clinicians". I would highly recommend everybody to attend the summer school next year."
Soulafa Mamlouk, Postdoc: “The term ‘translation cancer research’ has been so well drilled into our daily nomenclature that we often forget its actual meaning. This event truly reminds of its significance. The mingling of the medical and scientific audience reflected the true meaning of ‘translational’. Add to all that a dazzling resort on the cliffs of Portugal’s Algarve and you have the recipe for a perfect scientific summer course."
Sebastian Dieter, Physician Scientist: "The course was a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of trends in different research areas that will shape future cancer treatment. Listening to the exciting talks it became very clear that next generation cancer medicine is so much more than identifying targets, developing drugs and giving them to patients: Promoting personalized cancer medicine will mean building bridges between complex research areas as cancer epidemiology, prevention, innovative diagnostics and novel treatment strategies. We also need to build up on the developments of technology in the "omics“ era and equally take into account health economic issues. But above all: We need to closely collaborate Europe-wide and world-wide in a very structured manner. Interacting with all these fascinating researchers from all over Europe this meeting was an excellent starting point for me doing so."
Marilena Iorio, Postdoc: “Summer School is a unique opportunity for young researchers to share their experiences, to discuss about updated and relevant scientific issues, and to learn how translational research needs a strong integration between the preclinical and clinical realities. All of this takes place in a very stimulating and pleasant environment. I would strongly recommend this Summer School.”
Robert Jenke, Resident Physician: "The Summer School in Translational Cancer Research is an outstanding event which both fosters knowledge and highly increases one's motivation. Renowned speakers deliver exciting talks spanning basic research, clinical application up to rising the public awareness towards the importance of cancer research. Ambitious colleagues from different disciplines present fascinating aspects of their projects too. The whole event takes place within a well-rounded atmosphere e.g. chatting with the professors at close range during dinner or finding new friends and setting up collaborations while facing the waves of the ocean. In brief, taking part is a tremendous adventure for young researchers."
Alessandra Cataldo, Postdoc: “For a young post-doc as me, Summer School has been a very inspiring experience, where I had the opportunity to discuss important scientific topics from both a preclinical and clinical point of view, in a very international environment.”
