Dr Kofi Effah talks about his article published in ecancermedicalscience, which describes a novel cervical precancer screening approach in incarcerated women at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Ghana.  These are the first results on the prevalence of high risk HPV infection among women in prison in Ghana.

Dr Effah reports a much higher prevalence of HPV in the study population compared to the general population, meaning that women in prison are at a significantly higher risk of developing cervical cancer.  He goes on to emphasize that the approach developed by himself and his colleagues has demonstrated that nurses and midwives can be trained to offer cervical cancer screening services, which is vital in Lower and Middle Income Countries where there is often a lack of doctor.
